Why is Serving important?
“If you connect and grow, but don’t impact, you become a selfish follower.”
1. Selfishness is as foreign to Christianity as darkness to light. The true Christian lives to do good, he/(she) looks abroad to see whom he/(she) may serve, and with this eye he/(she) looks upon the wicked, upon the fallen and the off casts, seeking to reclaim them.
Philippians 2:3
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
2. Selfishness blocks unity in our community and is an enemy to fellowship.
3. When we serve out of need alone, we can quickly become weary and ineffective
4. Serving outside of our gifting can also prevent others from stepping into the roles that they are called to.
John 14:23-25 CSB
23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me. 25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (CSB)
4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person. 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good: 8 to one is given a message of wisdom  through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing  by the one Spirit, 10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy,  to another, distinguishing between spirits,  to another, different kinds of tongues,  to another, interpretation of tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills.
Romans 12:6-8 (CSB)
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
