Luke 23:32-34 (CSB)
32 Two others—criminals—were also led away to be executed with him. 33 When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
Five Rules of Forgiveness Good Friday Teaches Us:
1. Forgiveness starts with you.
Matthew 6:14-15 (CSB)
14 For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. 15 But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.
2. Forgiving others is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do.
Luke 17:1-4 (CSB)
1 He said to his disciples, Offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 Be on your guard. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, I repent, you must forgive him.
Romans 12:18-19 (CSB)
18 If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.
3. Forgiveness brings freedom.
Luke 7:47 (CSB)
47 Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.
4. If you can’t forgive, you’ll never move on.
Matthew 18:21-22 (CSB)
21 Then Peter approached him and asked, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? As many as seven times?” 22 “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven.”
5. If you’re struggling to forgive, remember what you’ve been forgiven for.
Ephesians 4:32 (CSB)
32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.
