Easter: This is the Gospel – March 31, 2024
Pastor Jeremy Mayol
1 Corinthians 15:54-58 (CSB)
54 Death has been swallowed up in victory.
55 Where, death, is your victory? Where, death, is your sting?
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always
excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in
vain.
John 20:1-10 (CSB)
1 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it
was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
2 So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus
loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t
know where they’ve put him!”
3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.
4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the
tomb first.
5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6 Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the
linen cloths lying there.
7 The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but
was folded up in a separate place by itself.
8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and
believed.
9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.
1 Timothy 3:16 (CSB)
And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the
flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations,
believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
1 Timothy 3:16 (MSG)
This Christian life is a great mystery, far exceeding our understanding, but some
things are clear enough: He appeared in a human body, was proved right by the
invisible Spirit, was seen by angels. He was proclaimed among all kinds of
peoples, believed in all over the world, taken up into heavenly glory.
The Effects of the Gospel:
1. The Gospel delivers power to you.
John 20:6-7 (CSB)
6 Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the
linen cloths lying there.
7 The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but
was folded up in a separate place by itself.
2. The Gospel provides a place for you.
John 20:10, 19-21 (CSB)
10 Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.
19 When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered
together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood
among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples
rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also
send you.”
Psalm 51:17
A broken and a contrite heart, God will not despise.
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near the broken; he saves those crushed in spirit.
