Power of Acts: Power of the Holy Spirit – February 11, 2024
Pastor Jeremy Mayol
Acts 1:3-5 (CSB)
3 After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about;
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.”
Acts 2:1-4 (CSB)
1 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.
3 They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them.
4 Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.
When you get saved, the Holy Spirit dwells in you and He does two primary things:
1. He seals you.
Ephesians 1:11-14 (CSB)
11 In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,
12 so that we who had already put our hope in Christ might bring praise to his glory.
13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.
14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
2. He guides you.
John 14:15-17, 25-26 (CSB)
15 If you love me, you will keep my commands.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.
17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
25 I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you.
26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
When you get baptized in the Spirit, you dwell in the Holy Spirit and two primary things happen:
1. You are filled with the Spirit.
Acts 2:4 (CSB)
Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.
Ephesians 5:15-21 (CSB)
15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk — not as unwise people but as wise —
16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil.
17 So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
18 And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:
19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord,
20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
2. You are gifted by the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (CSB)
4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord.
6 And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person.
7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good:
1 Corinthians 14:1 (ESV)
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
Jack Hayford’s Prayer for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit*
Dear Jesus,
I thank you and praise You for Your great love and faithfulness to me. My heart is filled with joy whenever I think of the great gift of salvation You have so freely given to me, and I humbly glorify You, Jesus; for You have forgiven me of all my sins and brought me to the Father.
Now I come on obedience to Your call. I want to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. I do not come because I am worthy myself, but because You have invited me to come.
Because You have washed me from my sins, I thank you that You have made the vessel of my life a worthy one to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God. I want to be overflowed with Your life, Your love, and Your power, Jesus. I want to show Your grace, Your words, Your goodness, and Your gifts to everyone I can.
And so, with simple childlike faith, I ask You, Lord: Fill me with the Holy Spirit. I open all of myself to You to receive all of Yourself in me. I love You, Lord, and I lift my voice in praise to You. I welcome Your might, Your miracles, and Your gifts. May they be made manifest in me- for Your glory and for Your praise!
