The Path of a Rooted Disciple – January 7, 2024

Pastor Jeremy Mayol

Acts 2:42-47 (CSB)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.

44 Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.

45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need.

46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts,

47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

How Do We Grow as Disciples of Jesus?

1. Connect with other disciples.

Acts 2:42, 46 (CSB)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts

2 Hebrews 10:24-25 (CSB)

24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works,

25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

2. Grow in your faith.

Acts 2:42-43, 46-47 (CSB)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

43 Everyone was filled with awe…

46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts,

47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

Colossians 2:6-8 (CSB)

6 So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him,

7 being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.

8 Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.

3. Impact the world around you.

Acts 2:43-45, 47 (CSB)

43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.

44 Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.

45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need.

47 …Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Jude 20-23 (CSB)

20 But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.

22 Have mercy on those who waver;

23 save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

What happens if I don’t Connect, Grow, and Impact?

If you Connect and Grow but don’t Impact, you’re a selective follower.

If you Grow and Impact but don’t Connect, you’re a distant follower.

If you Connect and Impact but don’t Grow, you’re a shallow follower.
