The Road to Emmaus – January 21, 2024

Pastor Jim Bryant & Pastor Mandi Kanei

1. Connecting as a community.

Luke 24:14 (NLT)

As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened.

Matthew 18:20 (NASB)

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.

Luke 24:15 (NLT)

As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.

Acts 2:42 (NLT)

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.

Acts 2:46 (NLT)

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

James 5:16 (KJV)

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

2. Growing in the Word of God.

Luke 24:25-27 (NASB)

And then He said to them, “You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!  Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?”  Then beginning with Moses and with all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures.

Isaiah 53 (NASB)

3. Making an Impact Through Hospitality.

Luke 24:29-30 (NLT)

By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.

1 Peter 4:8-9 (NLT)

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.

 Mark 2:15-17 (NLT)

Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?”  When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.
